'Tangarapaya'

(Interracial Tasmanian landscape)
March 2005

'Tangara' is a children's book by Tasmanian author Nan Chauncey. 'Paya' is Tasmanian Aboriginal for two.

I recently read this gentle story of friendship between two little girls, Merrina & Lexie to whom language and colour presented no barrier, and was deeply moved by it.

Never before have I been so inspired to put a story onto canvas. I wanted my painting to depict the enormity of the landscape and the Aboriginal people and their ties to the land, marching back into the distance and a time long gone.

And on the other side, the story of Merrina and Lexie and their bond of friendship. Their tale spiraling from within. This is the most symbolic work I have produced, the shapes and colours tell the story. Merrina and Lexie may have different coloured skin and come from different backgrounds, but essentially they are the same.
