(Funky Ulysses Butterfly)
May 2006
Just as the Phoenix rises from the ashes, stronger and more beautiful, so the caterpillar cocoons itself and is reborn as a glorious butterfly.
This painting is totally a product of Cyclone Larry and my grief process.
From the turmoil and destruction of the cyclone the Butterfly bursts forth in a stream of light symbolising rebirth and healing. The 'Triskele' or triple spiral within the cyclone is the ancient Celtic symbol relating to the sun, the afterlife and reincarnation.
The sun is the most potent Ancient Chinese symbol of Yang energy. It purifies and energises at the same time. While the rain in the opposing corner heals through regrowth.
My love and my connection to our beautiful paradise was so great that I felt all of it's pain and anguish, a part of me was destroyed alongside it.
But with time, paradise is slowly healing, and so too am I.
